Stainless steel tanks for breweries

The history of beer is almost as long as civilisation itself. There is evidence that brewing originated 6000 years ago. It is therefore clear that low-alcoholic beverages have been accompanying mankind since time immemorial. Of course, contemporary beer bears no resemblance to its original. This is due to the development of production and storage technologies.

The first beer tanks

It is assumed that the first beer was produced by the Sumerians. They left behind not only a recipe, but also a remarkable text, which is the Hymn to Ninkasi. She was the goddess of beer. It shows that brewing was then carried out exclusively by women, albeit under the watchful eye of an experienced brewer who was so respected that he was exempt from military service.

Original clay vessels resembling brewing vats have also been found in what is now Iraq. They can therefore be considered the world’s first containers for the production of a golden drink.

What was the brewing process like? Firstly, so-called beer bread was prepared from sprouted grain and various additives (e.g. fruit). It was then crushed and placed in the aforementioned clay container. Fermentation took place there. So it was not a very complicated process. The quality of the drink also left a lot to be desired, as the storage of beer was very low. In practice, it had to be drunk almost immediately after production.

The history of beer – the drink of the gods

The history of beer dates back to the oldest civilization of mankind, and there are at least two hypotheses of the first invention of beer. One of them claims that in today’s Turkey, 10,000 years BC the first seeds of beer could have been created, as evidenced by stone troughs with characteristic sediment, which could be the first trace of prehistoric beer.

The second, more popular hypothesis, takes us to the history of Mesopotamia around 4,000 BC, where, in today’s Iraq, there were Sumerians who forged a recipe for spelled beer on clay tablets. However, this recipe was definitely different from the modern one – the process started with the preparation of beer bread, dates, and other fruits. The Sumerians ate some of the bread and the rest they ground and doubled the fermentation in a clay vat. They also looked very different from the golden, clarified beer we know. Beer was then considered to be the drink of the gods, but originally it was quite cloudy, resembling a thick soup with impurities.

Another civilization that was dealt with in a more professional way was the Babylonians. They developed as many as 20 types of beer and introduced standards for the production of beer, which began to be protected by rights. The drink began to be made from spelled, barley and wheat.

How does beer storage work nowadays?

Today, the process of making beer is much more complicated. A single clay or wooden vat is no longer enough. Nowadays, the ingredients go first to the mash tun and then to the filter tun. After a few hours, a brewing tank is added to the process. And when fermentation is complete, they go into a special tank for aging.

Modern solutions are no longer based on wood. Stainless steel tanks and similar models are the only hygienic and extremely durable solutions. These allow brewers to concentrate on creating sophisticated flavors with delicate notes that will not be affected by the way the beer is stored.
