Raw Milk Tank
Dairy Tanks
Dairy tanks play a crucial role in the dairy processing industry, especially on a dairy farm. These tanks are designed to store fresh milk collected from cows in a clean and safe manner.
With various storage capacities, they can hold bulk milk in litres or gallons, ensuring that the milk production meets the demands of the dairy supply chain.
To maintain freshness and prevent bacteria growth, milk chilling is essential. Thus, chillers are integrated into the installation of these tanks. The temperature must be monitored closely, ideally below 4°C (40°F), to cool the milk and minimise the risk of contamination.
Easy-to-clean features and CIP (clean-in-place) systems enhance hygiene and food safety throughout the milk storage process.
Once raw milk is stored in the tanks, it is ready for milk collection via a pipeline system that transports it to the processing plant. Many farmers use various measurement systems to monitor the load and ensure that valve systems function correctly, allowing for efficient milk storage and transfer.
Milk Tanks and Cream Tanks
Over the past 20 years, Gpi has produced practically every kind of dairy tank and equipment for almost all large dairy brands worldwide, including:
- raw milk tanks,
- cream processing tanks,
- whey tanks,
- yoghurt tanks,
- fermentation tanks.
Gpi applies EHEDG design standards to deliver a hygienic design. If so desired, purely EHEDG-certified components can be used.
Milk tanks are insulated storage tanks for unprocessed raw milk. This product is usually stored in large vertical tanks (silos) up to approximately 500m3.
By means of side entry agitators, raw milk is kept in motion in order to prevent cream from forming. An angled bottom ensures good outflow.

FAQ
What are raw milk storage tanks used for?
Raw milk storage tanks are used to store and refrigerate raw milk immediately after it is collected from the farm. These tanks ensure the milk is kept at a suitable temperature to maintain its quality and prevent spoilage.
How do cream tanks differ from raw milk storage tanks?
Cream tanks are specifically designed to store cream, which is a byproduct of milk processing. While both types of tanks are refrigerated, cream tanks may have different measurement and sealing mechanisms to accommodate the unique properties of cream.
What features should I look for in a raw milk storage tank?
When selecting a raw milk storage tank, look for features such as a high-quality seal, accurate measurement sensors, and the ability to maintain a stable temperature for extended periods.
Additionally, tanks should be resistant to corrosion and easy to sterilise.
Can raw milk be stored in regular refrigerators?
While raw milk can be stored in regular refrigerators for short periods, it is recommended to use dedicated refrigerated storage tanks for long-term storage. This ensures better temperature control and stability, which is critical for maintaining high-quality milk.
